The Roskamp Institute is proud to announce a collaborative four-day Red Tide Student
Workshop bringing together students, scientists, and educators from across the
Suncoast region to provide immersive, hands-on training in red tide research. The
program will culminate in a Student Research Symposium hosted at the University of
South Florida (USF) on July 9.

This unique educational initiative is being conducted in partnership with the University of
South Florida (USF), Save Our Seabirds, Mote Marine Laboratory, and Southeast High
School, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing marine science education and
preparing the next generation of researchers and environmental stewards.

Throughout the workshop, students will participate in field and laboratory experiences
designed to mirror real-world scientific research. Activities will include marine organism
collection in coastal ecosystems, harmful algal bloom (HAB) investigations, microscopy
training, laboratory safety instruction, data analysis, and exposure to advanced
analytical techniques such as ELISA and mass spectrometry.

Field-based learning experiences on City Island and surrounding mangrove ecosystems
will provide students with direct exposure to marine habitats and ecological monitoring
practices. Visits to Save Our Seabirds will further demonstrate the environmental and
wildlife impacts of harmful algal blooms on local seabird populations.

“The Roskamp Institute believes strongly in creating opportunities for students to
engage directly with active scientific research,” said Emelia Obey, Director of
Development and Communications. “By collaborating with leading institutions and
community organizations, we are able to provide students with meaningful experiences
that bridge classroom learning with real-world application.”

The workshop is designed to guide students through the complete scientific process,
from field observations and sample collection to laboratory analysis, statistical
interpretation, and scientific communication. Students will work alongside professional
scientists and educators while developing skills in marine biology, environmental health,
biostatistics, and research presentation.

The program will conclude with a Student Research Symposium at USF on July 9,
where participants will present their findings in a professional conference-style setting.
Students will deliver oral presentations summarizing their research methods, data
analysis, and ecological conclusions while engaging in peer review and discussion with
faculty, researchers, and fellow students.

By fostering collaboration among academic institutions, nonprofit organizations, and
local schools, this workshop highlights the importance of interdisciplinary partnerships in
addressing environmental challenges facing Florida’s coastal ecosystems.

The Roskamp Institute is honored to work alongside USF, Save Our Seabirds, Mote
Marine Laboratory, and Southeast High School to inspire future scientists and support
experiential learning opportunities that strengthen both education and community
engagement.
